Why Regular Six-Month Dental Checkups Actually Matter

It's a common assumption: if nothing hurts, there's nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, many of the most common dental problems — cavities, gum disease, early infections — don't cause any pain in their early stages. By the time you feel discomfort, the issue has often progressed to the point where treatment is more involved, and more expensive, than it needed to be.

A routine checkup every six months lets us catch these problems while they're still small. A cavity caught early might need a simple filling; the same cavity left untreated for a year could progress to needing root canal treatment or even extraction. Gum disease follows a similar pattern — early gum inflammation is easily reversible with a professional cleaning, but if it's left to advance, it can lead to gum recession and eventually tooth loosening.

Beyond catching problems early, regular checkups also include professional cleaning that removes tartar buildup brushing can't reach on its own, which helps prevent new issues from developing in the first place.

If it's been longer than six months since your last dental visit — even if nothing feels wrong — it's a good time to book a checkup. Prevention is almost always simpler, faster, and more affordable than treatment after the fact.
