Gum Disease: The Early Warning Signs Most People Miss

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss, it's tempting to assume you were just brushing a little too hard. In most cases, though, bleeding gums are actually the earliest sign of gum disease — and it's one of the most commonly overlooked symptoms in dentistry.

Gum disease starts as gingivitis: the gums become inflamed and irritated due to plaque buildup along the gumline. At this stage, symptoms are often mild — some redness, occasional bleeding, maybe slightly puffy gums — which is exactly why it's easy to dismiss. The encouraging part is that gingivitis is fully reversible with a professional cleaning and better daily brushing and flossing habits.

Left untreated, though, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, where the infection spreads below the gumline and starts affecting the bone and tissue that hold your teeth in place. At this stage, damage isn't fully reversible — treatment focuses on stopping further progression and protecting the teeth you still have.

Beyond bleeding, other signs worth paying attention to include persistent bad breath that doesn't go away with brushing, gums that look like they're pulling away from your teeth (making teeth appear longer), and any looseness or shifting in your teeth.

The distance between gingivitis and periodontitis is really just time and attention. If your gums bleed regularly, it's worth getting checked rather than waiting — a simple cleaning now can prevent a much bigger problem later.
