Dental Implants Explained Simply — What They Are and How They Work

If you've lost a tooth, you've probably heard "dental implant" mentioned as an option — but the term itself doesn't explain much. Here's what it actually means, in plain language.

Think of a natural tooth as having two parts: the part you see above the gum, and the root, hidden below, anchoring it into your jawbone. When a tooth is lost, both parts are gone. A dental implant replaces that root — it's a small screw, usually made of titanium, placed directly into the jawbone. Over the next couple of months, the bone actually grows around it and locks it in place, almost like the implant becomes part of your jaw.

Once that healing is complete, a replacement tooth — called a crown — is attached on top. That crown is shaped and coloured to match your other teeth, so from the outside, it simply looks like a normal tooth again.

Why do people choose implants over other options like a bridge or a denture? Mainly because they feel and function the most like a real tooth. You can chew normally, they don't need to be removed at night, and — importantly — they help stop the jawbone from shrinking, which is something that happens naturally after a tooth is lost and left unreplaced for too long.

The process does take a bit of patience. After the implant is placed, there's a healing period of a couple of months before the crown goes on top, since the bone needs time to properly fuse around it. During the procedure itself, the area is fully numbed, so people are often surprised by how manageable it is.

Not everyone needs an implant for every missing tooth — sometimes a bridge or denture makes more sense depending on your situation, budget, or how many teeth are missing.
