5 Brushing Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes (And How to Fix Them)
Brushing seems simple enough — most of us have done it twice a day since childhood. But a few small habits, repeated daily for years, can quietly reduce how well your teeth are actually getting cleaned. Here are the ones we see most often.
Brushing too hard. It feels like more pressure means a cleaner mouth, but the opposite is often true. Scrubbing hard can wear down enamel over time and irritate your gums, eventually causing them to recede. The fix is simple: use a soft-bristled brush and light, gentle pressure — let the bristles do the work, not your arm strength.
Not brushing long enough. Most people brush for around 30-45 seconds without realizing it, when the actual recommendation is two full minutes. That's enough time to properly cover every tooth surface. Try timing yourself once — it's usually longer than it feels.
Skipping the tongue and gumline. Plaque doesn't just sit on the flat surfaces of your teeth — it builds up right along the gumline and on your tongue too, which is also a major source of bad breath. Angling your brush slightly toward the gumline, and giving your tongue a gentle brush as well, covers both.
Brushing right after eating something acidic. It feels intuitive to brush right after a meal, but if you've just had something acidic — citrus fruit, a fizzy drink, even coffee — your enamel is temporarily softened. Brushing immediately can actually wear it away faster. Waiting about 30 minutes lets your enamel firm back up first.
Holding onto an old toothbrush too long. Bristles splay and soften with use, and a worn-out brush simply cleans less effectively even if you can't tell by looking at it. As a general rule, replace your toothbrush (or electric brush head) every three months, or sooner if the bristles look frayed.
None of these fixes take extra time out of your day — they're really just small adjustments to something you're already doing. Small habits, repeated daily, add up more than people expect.
